Of all the menswear shows at NYFW SS13 that I have seen to date, it has to be Lacoste that really sticks out in my mind. I love the way creative director Felipe Oliveira Baptista has used the simple lines of the tennis court to draw a trompe l’oeil-inlay architectural formation along the border of collars, breast pockets and hems.
I also love the use of different colours to create a mini inner-version of the piece - really great for creating a leaner look. In fact, I love all the colours in the collection from the sun-blanched white through to the blue, green, rust and the various pinks.
I think though in the end it's Baptista's novel fabric applications that are the most desirable aspect such as the sporty jersey of the suits and blazers and the gossamer and rubberised material of the airy trench coats.
In this, the company's 80th birthday year, I don't think that tennis pro Jean René Lacoste could have imagined that his line of polo shirts would have evolved into to the lifestyle brand of today.
