Walking on to The Rat Pack set for the AW14 collection is not what I expected when I arrived in the The Club at the Ivy. I mean I have a collection of Chester Barrie male suits that were my father’s. They are still in mint condition with fantastic fabric and immaculate detailing but very, very traditional British tailoring. Now, this was something different!
To be fair, Chester Barrie has introduced a few styled pieces in their previous collections, but with AW2014 they have totally embraced the style aesthetic, yet still keeping that amazing Chester Barrie detailing and quality. Their teal evening wear jacket is a perfect example – a bold shawl collar in a lush cotton/cashmere/silk velvet can easily be worn with a shirt, jersey or just some really cool jeans.
The winner though has got to be their 5-pocket jean-style trouser. Under £200, it’s made in tailoring cloth, so just perfect for those occasions where jeans just don’t cut it but neither does a suit – solving the casual but traditional quandary that a lot of men have. Flat fronted with a subtle jetted half-frog mouth; the pocketing is totally ideal for coins or car parking tickets.
In their more traditional wear, there are printed velvet suits, a pea coat and a very slim fitting change coat – ideal for a less formal media style setting.
I was also deliciously excited – although not too surprised, to see the epitome of British style, David Gandy. Those 5-pocket trousers would look really handsome on him…Sigh.
