Although it had a scheduled start of 5:00pm, the show didn't kick off until well past 6:00pm, but this is most probably because there was a special treat in store from Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week - a cocktail launch party where we were treated to champagne, canapés and yummy cocktails.
It was a great start to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia in Sydney, even after the sky opened up on the Carriageworks venue and the congregating beautiful crowd had to mince, run or skip their way through puddles, aided by the MBFWA usherettes who were on the ready with large umbrellas.
Carla Zampatti's palette of black and white had teaser pieces in red, blue and acid lime marking a stunning contrast. First though, her elongated silhouettes in crepe and lace came in the shape of bellbottoms, jumpsuits, slim long and maxi skirts with barely there tops and sheaths with cuts going on forever, almost carrying a whisper of the painter, Modilgiani. Exceptions included the beautiful boyfriend oversized jacket and white boyfriend shirt.
Next is the juxtaposition. The gowns, hourglass and ballerina skirts with fitted or barely their tops seemed to have a real festival of organzas and some were accompanied by little feather jackets.
It was just the most perfect way to begin the week, with a brand that started up in 1965 and now is an icon of Australian fashion - with more than 27 stores nationwide.
