I first met Gerard Gourdon Premier Paris, the upscale fashion showcase for the trade professionals. His pieces jumped out from the overcrowded array of jewels on display. 'Cosmos' was the name of the collection and I fell in love with it instantly.
Which is always dangerous because the more I see, the more I want!
His pieces are fun and enthusiastic and also make you think a bit - just not too deeply. His pieces are very versatile and can be worn every day, which is perfect. The work is inspired by a vintage jewellery look, but Gerard adds his own twists to give the pieces a 'so now' feel.
I decided to pop into his studio in the Haute Marais – the ever-trendy area around the canals in Paris 10 where his atelier is and the pieces are all made.
I am always deeply in awe of how designers make a dream become a reality, especially when there is so many things to do to get there such as sourcing materials, creating prototypes, finding the correct machinery, creating the designs, pricing, wholesale, press, clients, marketing, the dreaded website, and the list goes on. It is a massive process and Gerard does it all with a huge smile and a small team of only three people.
I managed a couple of questions before he had to run off to a meeting.
How do you see the Mimilamour brand developing? Is it like a lifestyle ? .. Your lifestyle? Could you see yourself maybe going into food or shoes or homeware?
At Mimilamour I am doing many small edition jewellery ! They are pieces that I want to do but they dont fit in any collection. I do them anyway ; ) Because this is the freedom I need to maintain to reach full joy and happyness ! For the clothes pieces or the leather pieces its the same process ! I have the idea of doing them, decide to go ahead, I find time and skill to produce and makeit happen ! Small edition, rare, and quickly sold to let the following idea make its way up !
I see those mini collections , sweat shirts, cluches, jackets as accessories to fahion, accessoriesto youre style.
Is 'made in france' and 'responsible sourcing' important to the label?
The made in france is very important for Mimilamour . From the beginning we are making all our jewellery in our workshop in Paris. It is sometimes harder, always more expensive but the reward is priceless ! It is so rare now for designer to produce in Paris, I am very attached to this local way of organising my work.
If you had to recommend a place to eat for someone visiting Paris where would you choose ?
In Paris there is a good trendy place opening everyweek ; )
For dinner "le chateaubriand" in the 10th and for the bread , dont miss the gluten free of "chambelland" in the 11th.
Gerard's next small edition will be the 'Perfecto' jacket (biker jacket) . It's slim fit recycled and has hard hitting graphic print... due out in December, I've already placed my order.
