The British Fashion Council are dedicated to promoting emerging British designers and LONDON show ROOMS is the perfect example of their endeavours. London based designer Shao Yen is showcasing hisAW16 collection for the duration of London Fashion Week as part of the initiative.
Exploring his own fascination with the shapes, lines and curves of the human body, Shao Yen’s collection – which is aptly named Doll – has strong surrealist and sculptural elements inspired by the work of Hans Bellmer.
Unnatural shapes and exaggerated silhouettes are created using circular panels of fabric, rounded shoulders and curving necklines.
Contrasts of texture are created using diverse fabrics such as traditional Chinese silks with wool and cotton, crimped net, sports fabric and knitwear.
Shao Yen uses layering, quilted material, pleated panels and embroidery to further accentuate the distortion and manipulation of the body shapes, while also creating a sinuous linear quality.
