The thing about velvet It is easily damaged and it can get threadbare especially in the creases which comes from sitting. Sometimes also around the arms from holding a bag or clutching a loved one. Dry cleaning can make things worst so you need to find someone that specialises.
This darling purple Saint Laurent dress came to me in what can only be called ,' unloved mode ' - true to its velvet heritage and wear and tear - it had been hacked around the arms and back to get rid of creases and then sown back horrifically as a fitted dress. In fact so tight that the owner couldn't get into it - sadly neither could I ! But this particular colour and Saint Laurent velvet made it worthy of an attempted rescue . I have tried to date the original dress and concluded that it would have been either from the 60's or even maybe early 80's but the label has long disappeared . So with the help of a fabulous seamstress in Brussels it was recreated again adding a black velvet black panel in order to widen the piece . It's still rather haphazard but it's now certainly loved.
