Hissia is only a couple of years old but its popularity has far the Canaries-based jewellery brand has far surpassed expectations. The young label’s extraordinary success is probably down to a killer combination and dynamic synergy of creative director, Beatriz Vergara and her husband.
With a biannual collection which can be aquired in hot fashion destinations such as Brussels, New York and mainland Spain – as well as in the Canaries & on line – the brand is following a carefully crafted plan of expansion.
The backbone of the brand is integrity, which they reinforce in their choice of craftsman; as well as the focus on producing pieces in limited edition series, all of which are finished by hand in Spain.
Even the packaging – which come in acid free boxes with organic cotton sleeves – are made by hand at AFES (a charity that finds work for mental health patients). Beatriz’s inspiration for her designs come from a process of exploring various historical and cultural references especially Africa. Hissia means ' emotion, sentiment and passion in Swahili.
I visited the brand’s showroom which, as expected, was sleek and uncluttered, oozing the quiet elegance of Beatriz herself.
When you design the collections, do you have a particular woman or man in mind, or a muse?
No, I don’t. I just think about myself and what I like. I think having your own brand is about being true to yourself and creating those objects that you identify with, and that you would like to wear.
What is currently your favourite piece in the collection?
I love the Marrakech collection. It was only formed by hoop earrings before, but we will be launching a necklace and bracelet for the autumn winter campaign. I love the texture of this collection and the fact that the hoops combine ebony and gold, which is a great combination! They look great when worn, because they are, in my opinion, the perfect size. I also love the new necklace, which is really flattering and easy to wear.
I know you are working on your next seasons collection. Will you be creating a new range, or adding a different colour?
For the new season we are enlarging some of our collections that, initially were only made up of one or two pieces. I will also be launching a collection inspired on Spanish culture, which is something totally new to me! I’m very excited about it!
Where would you recommend eating out in Santa Cruz.
I love the restaurant El Aguarde(http://www.restauranteelaguardetenerife.es/es/). They have outstanding quality, very reasonable prices and a very pleasant atmosphere. They also have a very nice terrace where you can have lunch or dinner, which is great for the summer!
