Bea de la Rosa is a label that tumbled onto my horizon at the first fashion catwalk of the co-working space Franja 47 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Sitting on the roof with the back drop of a fabulous sunset, I figured that nothing could really match the perfection of nature! Then I saw Russia – a piece from the collection inspired by Willem de Kooning and I was awe-struck. Beatriz's background is in graphics and her use of colours is pretty awesome.
Later on in the evening I spoke to the lady herself…
You design pieces for both men and women. Do you see your brand as offering something unisex?
Yes. While I definitely like to design for both men and women, the male sector has criticised me for not having made more masculine shirts. I think the men are still under served in the fashion world.
How many collections do you launch annually? When is the next collection due out and what can we expect? Do you have any new collaborations in the pipeline?
At the moment I am only planning one collection per year. For the next ss2017 collection that I will start work on next month, the concept will be around the symbolism of the eye throughout the history of art, its different meaning and how they are depicted over time. Many painters such as Magritte,Dali and El Bosco present the eye as a symbol in many of their works and that is what I am studying to inspire me in my next collection.
Slow orFast fashion.Which do you prefer?
I am aware of the current market demands; of the consumerism which we are subjected to by the large textile companies, where the constant renewal of clothes, and constant purchasing is encouraged. I don’t, even remotely associate myself with this approach. It probably won’t make me rich in my career, but that’s not my goal anyway. I am in favour of responsible consumption and buying clothes that will last you for life.
Can you recommend one of your favourite restaurants, for someone visiting Santa Cruz the first time?
Well, I would recommend them to eat on the ground floor of the market of Our Lady of Africa, as well as being a unique and different experience, the products are of the highest quality.
