Getting myself ready for the menswear collections starting this week made me remember Steven Tai. You’d think most designers would choose an alluringly beautiful man or woman as their muse, but not Steven Tai! In fact, the designer’s inspiration for his brand steventai, has always been the nerdy or quirky girl, who shies away from the spotlight and prefers to stick her head in a book!
His Spring Summer 2017 collection sees the return of this charming bookworm, celebrating her geekiness with a sense of pride!
And although his pieces are inspired by awkward eccentricity, the result is a distinctly refined wardrobe, blending intellect with irony. The collection plays with textiles and texture in a unique and innovative way, using materials such as light hand-cut organza folded with zig-zag stitching across the hems. Elsewhere, pieces are assembled without any seams, instead being woven together using squares of net and tiny cotton ribbons, giving an air of innocence and youth.
With all the models sporting nerdy round spectacles, this collection really did seem to be for the woman who stands confidently apart from the mainstream.
