There has been quite a lot of buzz recently revolving around the summer trend of sartorially highlighting the shoulders. The style set are doing this in a variety of ways..
Balenciaga SS17
First up is the hulky power shoulders, as seen in the amazingly structured jackets with whale bone rods by Demna Gvasalia at Balenciaga, or the boxy, tailored jackets and coats by Phoebe Philo at Celine and the suits at Jill Sanders. Rodolfo Paglialunga has also created an amazing interpretation of the power suit which merges the 1940s look with the suits from the 1940s.
Bianca Spender Resort SS17
Next up is the cold shoulder trend, which is sadly on its way out forFW17. I say sadly because I personally love this trend. Not only is it the perfect way to keep the restof your arms covered, and lets face it I know so many women that have an issue with their arms, I know I certainly do) but it is also just the right amount of sexy baring a bit of skin.Love her or hate her, I can now totally understand why Hilary Clinton voted Donna Karen's black cut-out shoulder dress as her favourite trend back in 1993.
Celine SS17
Clinton looked so Uber hot in the so-called cold-shoulder dress designed for her first ever state dinner. And although you see cut-out shoulders everywhere now, at the time it was relatively unheard of. In fact, a couple of years ago Donna Karensaid: I got killed in the press for having a dress with cut-out shoulders. Now you see them all over the place. But then between 1991 and 1993, Donna Karen did seem to cover all the variations on the shoulder trends from big bold shoulders jackets to single shoulder dresses which are back as a hit again this summer.
Self Portrait SS17
Unfortunately, with the plethora of cut-out shoulder tops and dresses on the high street I feel we may have reached saturation point on this one, and I guess it could be time to move on. So instead, say hello to the cut-out shoulders more elegant sibling–the one shoulder trend, which will most certainly help us make the transition from summer to winter with its multilayering potential for the colder months. Think over long sleeved tees and shirts or under jackets. Just check the one shoulderdresses by Saint Laurent and Self Portaits for SS17.
