We’ve all heard of London, Paris, Milan and New York Fashion Weeks; but the lesser-known Lagos Fashion Week is currently underway in the Nigerian capital and its opening our eyes to the rich diversity, impressive innovation and modern creativity of the fashion scenes both in Nigeria itself, and also in Africa as a whole, with pan-continental designers showcasing their impressive collections on this physical platform that is repositioning fashion in Africa.
I first got whiff of the dramatic evolution currently underway in the fashion industry in Africa during an inspirational showcase during Paris Fashion Week SS19. The event took place at Gallery Sakura in collaboration with #SHETRADES and presented the new season collections of some of the biggest names to come out of the continent recently.
These included, Aprelle Duany, Eclectic Chique, Anyango Mpinga, Afrodesiac, Grey, Tilayo, Zashadu, Iamisigo. And I have to say, I was seriously impressed with the whole event. The trends coming out of Africa are no longer just artisanal creations. There is a new maturity and sophistication to these collections and the quality of the craftsmanship, material and sartorial style is just amazing.
Just look at the stunning pieces by Kenyan brand Anyango Mpinga – a luxury brand that has become known for its elegance, authenticity and style, where cultural heritage blends seamlessly with modern elements to create a sustainable, ethical brand that is timeless in its appeal.
And these designers will be out in force again at Lagos Fashion Week, with all eyes on the next big names such as Iamisigo, as well as old favourites like Lisa Folawiyo.
And following Lagos Fashion Week is The GTBank Fashion Weekend also in Lagos this November, bringing together the most promising, talented and recognised fashion designers, brands and retail enterprises from across Nigeria and abroad to showcase the latest trends.
