This season’s patent trend has got me so excited. Its probably the vintage element. The manufacturing of this kind of leather goes as far as back as 1819, but the original material was later substituted by a cheaper plastic version in the 60’s. To me that high gloss shine will always make me think of the 1960’s and of André Courrèges who changed the way women dressed and introduced vinyl as a material to be worn.
For many years at Courreges, vinyl was used to make the jackets, trenches and mini-skirts that became symbolic to the brand. But now, with new artistic director Yolanda Zobel at the helm, the brand is saying NO to plastic with ‘The End of Plastic’ operation which will see the gradual depletion of the 6,000 metres of vinyl that the brand still has in its inventory. Each piece will made from vinyl will carry a number to symbolise the countdown to the End of Plastic, when the final metres of vinyl are used up.
But back to the Autumn Patent trend. Many of the street style darlings are opting for statement patent leather trench coats this season, like the updated glossy trench by Fendi. Simone Rocha's feminine dresses were given a subversive, fetishistic edge when created in patent red trench coats and Ralph Lauren also have a sexy red patent trench in their collection last SS18 you might still find one .
My choice would be a patent pencil skirt; and there is plenty to choose from. If winter whites are your thing, Alexa Chung’s eponymous label features a mid-length faux patent leather pencil skirt with a slit up the middle which makes it easy to walk in. Eudon Choi has - racing green wrap around skirt with popper buttons and a slit up the back. Balmain has an incredible patent tops and Prabal Gurung’s black patent SS18 dress is what I missed out on last summer but might be around somewhere!
And on the high-street there is patent everything, from bum-bags at Bershka and patent Lady Tote Bags at Urban Outfitters to grey patent leather heels at Zara and Giuseppe Zanotti patent-Leather Combat Boots. Just take your pick and wear it with style and attitude!
