Autumn and winter feel like miles away with these heatwaves, but if the catwalks are anything to go by, tights are going to be a huge part of this year’s cooler weather wardrobe. Skirt trends are looking long or mid-length, so when selecting your tights for the coming season, here are the trends to watch.
First is the return of opaque tights, an homage to the 90’s when teamed with ankle strap sandals and strip dresses at Bora Aksu, and easily styled with skirts, dresses and under trousers. And they don’t have to be frumpy – look at Valentino’s AW collection, teaming barely-there dresses with thick black opaque tights. Definitely still sexy.
Sheer tights are also set to be popular next season, reminiscent of 80’s glamour when paired with cocktail dresses at Balmain and Givenchy, or given a little pop of playfulness, with prints and embellishments like Moschino’s gold dollar sign covered pair, teamed with a matching LBD and long, metallic gold gloves. Paco Rabanne and Saint Laurent both went polka dot, Rodarte and Maryam Nassir Zadeh featured interesting patterns, while Courrèges did sheer logo tights and I had to get a pair whilst Gucci did sheer and lacy.
And perhaps the most fun trend of all is the impending rise of glittery tights so Studio 54 and 79’s . Anna Sui delivered pairs in bright, punchy colours including gold, which would look fab paired with a little cocktail dress for the festive season. I loved the shimmery purple and red fishnets at Halpern and the glittery ribbed pantyhose at Marc Jacobs, styled with shorter evening dresses.
So while tanning those pins for September’s bare-legged outfits is a must, and an homage to the ‘tough woman bare-leg trend’ perpetuated by Anna Wintour, for those who feel the chill of the changing season, it’s a welcoming trend that will hopefully stay around for a while. And it’s still so hot outside, that if you’re lucky, you’ll be able to pick up a couple of pairs in the sales – no one else is thinking about tights in this weather!
