Glorious chunks of GOLD treasure which I adore, for me means the need to immediately hold and try on! Imogen Belfield will be exhibiting her main collection at Rock Vault in Somerset House at LONDON FASHION WEEK from 13th to 17th September – YIPPEEE! She has been very busy for the last couple of years and has deservedly been showered with awards: New Designer of the Year in 2010, International Jewellery London’s Bright Young Gem in 2011 and then The Kick Start and Style Sight Trend award in 2012. To add to this, last year she was announced by Professional Jeweller as a NexGem and included in the list of Hot 100 jewellers in the UK and around the world.
I finally met her in person at the launch of her collaboration with ethical jewellery brand, MADE.
Me: How long did it take you to do this particular collection for MADE? Imogen: All in all, it took two to three months from the start, travelling to Kenya, then to Nairobi and finally to fruition. Me: How did the manufacturing process work, did you show them once and then they continued? You have a very particular way of working. Imogen: They hadn’t seen anything like this so the dialogue was quite interesting – they enjoyed the challenge. The artisans are very talented and know exactly what they’re doing. I learnt a lot from them as well!
Me: Is this the first time you have used rope and leather? Is this a new medium for you? Imogen: Yes it’s the first time I have used rope and also the first time not plating anything. That covers basic brass, recycled glass, and yes leather too.
Keep an eye out, ‘Imogen Belfield for Made’ is due out in October. With prices starting at about £30, it’s hard not to snap up the lot! MADE creates beautiful, unique handcrafted accessories in their Kenyan workshop; training, teaching and empowering its team by providing sustainable employment and opportunities within their community.
